WINTER 2018 – CLASS DESCRIPTIONS


YOUTH CLASSES

 

Free


FREE FOR ALL! (UP TO AGE 12 OR SO) a FREE drop-in class!

EVERY SATURDAY, 9:30 – 10:15 AM

Stop in for a fun, free Saturday morning art project with one of our creative and enthusiastic staff members. Pop your head in or stay for the whole session! Kids under 8 must be accompanied by a parent or older pal to help them with the project.

ART STUDIO (AGES 0-12) a FREE drop-in class!

Kids of all ages now have full access to the PCA’s art materials and studio space! Inspire your kids to explore art independently through open-ended drawing, painting and collage, or to try out a new technique by working along with the group on a facilitated project (we’ll have a fun, optional project going on each time). The emphasis is on creative learning and play through art making, and kids are welcome to drop in for 15 minutes, or stay for the full session as they like. Parents can participate too! (Children 8 and under must have a parent present.)

 

MESSY ART (2-6 YEARS OLD) a FREE drop-in class!

JANUARY 8TH, FEBRUARY 5TH, MARCH 5TH

Join us for an hour of creative play and socializing between tots and grown-ups alike! No need to sign up or pay any fees, just stop by the Arts Center to participate. We’ll lead fun activities that are easy to recreate at home, with a focus on supportive early education practices through good ol’ play. Finger-and-toe painting, play dough, homemade slime, and more… we plan on getting messy, so please dress accordingly! 

This class is offered to 2-6 year olds accompanied by an adult.

 

NO SCHOOL MAKE-AND-TAKE CRAFTS (AGES 8 AND UP) a FREE drop-in class!

Out of school with nothing to do? Drop into a make-and-take workshop at the Arts Center! We’ll have a seasonal project going on, and each student will take home some cool crafts at the end of the session.

Weekend Workshops


PAPER MÂCHÉ (AGES 7-12)A DROP-IN CLASS!

JANUARY 13TH – 27TH

Ever wanted to make a piñata? How about a mask? We’ll tackle those projects and more, learning the techniques and possibilities of paper and paste sculptures, aka papier-mâché, or, as translated to English, chewed paper sculpture.

CLAY CREATIONS (AGES 7-12) A DROP-IN CLASS!

SATURDAYS, 10:15 AM – NOON

FEBRUARY 3RD – 17TH

Drop in to explore clay building! We’ll make pinch pots, slab constructed boxes, free-form sculpture and, if there's student interest, try out wheel throwing. Students will work in wet clay the first two sessions, and the last session will be reserved for glazing. Clay pieces will be ready to pick up the week after the glazing class. Please wear clothes that can get messy.

Guitar (Ages 8-12)

JANUARY 11TH – MARCH 15TH, (10 SESSIONS)

A solid introduction to guitar covering chords, rhythm and music reading, as well as care of the instrument itself. This class will provide the foundation for students to go on to play all styles of music from rock to classical to folk; and Mike will incorporate these styles as students progress. Students who already have experience playing will improve on their skills by taking on lead guitar parts in the group.

Suzuki Violin And Fiddle Classes

The Suzuki Method is a world-renowned music curriculum and philosophy. Learning an instrument takes practice and support. During class, Peg will provide information for students and parents about daily fiddle practice. Parents should be prepared to attend each class along with their child, and are expected to help their children practice at home every day. Consultation with the instructor is recommended BEFORE renting or purchasing an instrument. Please email us at classes@pendletonarts.org with any questions.

GUIDE TO YOUTUBING

JANUARY 8TH – MARCH 5TH (9 SESSIONS)

By the end of class, students will be able to create their own custom thumbnails and channel art. They will be able to record well, edit efficiently, and expand their channel. They will also learn the necessary knowledge to be a good youtuber in general! This class is for anyone who has ever been interested in creating their own YouTube channel. While experience isn’t necessary, it is recommended that you to have access to a computer and internet outside of class and a google account. Parent permission is required.

 

BOOK CLUB

JANUARY 8TH – 29TH (4 SESSIONS)

We’ll be reading the New York Times bestseller, Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell, a love story about two misfit high school students set in 1986. There are a few instances of harsh language, parent permission is required. Book Club is a cooperative environment where students will read and discuss literature. Perfect if you love to read (or write) and would enjoy a good book! Snacks will be available by 3:30, feel free to show up early to eat and catch up on some reading.

 

ORIGAMI & PAPER ARTS

In our origami/paper arts class, we’ll learn the basics of origami and expand our knowledge from there. We’ll even use books for cool art! After learning the origami basics, we’ll move on to other origami pieces, book art folding, and more.

 

ACRYLIC PAINTING

FEBRUARY 6TH – 27TH (4 SESSIONS)

Focusing on materials exploration, you'll discover your own painting styles and techniques, and get comfortable working with paint. We’ll learn different approaches to painting (with a little help from Bob Ross) and finish two paintings that show your individual creativity. Jump in and explore acrylics with us!

SEWING & CROSS STITCH

STAGE MAKEUP

Learn some of the basics of designing and applying stage make-up. We’ll start with learning how to transform our faces to look decades older before moving onto faux injures and disguises.

Build a solid foundation for playing the guitar or bass through learning basic chords, strumming patterns, and how to tune and care for your instrument. No music experience necessary, but if you’ve taken a class before we’ll meet your skill level. Acoustic and electric instruments are welcome. Loaner instruments are available for the duration of the class.

 

WORKING WITH CLAY

JANUARY 11TH – MARCH 22ND (11 SESSIONS)

Step into the third dimension with this workshop that will bring some depth into your world. Learn how to sculpt, build and construct clay in the PCA’s Alice Fossatti Ceramics Studio. Absolutely no experience working with clay is necessary. Beginners and returning students are all welcome.

JEWELRY MAKING: BEAD STRINGING

Learn to string beads on jewelry wire to make necklaces and bracelets. Learn about various stringing materials, bead, clasps, and other components needed to make single strand or multiple strand jewelry. Students will learn about the proper techniques and materials to use to create their own jewelry. Bring your favorite beads, a broken necklace or bracelet to remake, or chose beads from the Arts Center collection.

NATURE PHOTOGRAPHY: BASICS & BEYOND*

FEBRUARY 24TH

Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned photographer, using a fancy camera or your phone, this one-day class will provide the basics of good composition and teach you how to capture the beauty in nature. We'll take in the exhibit in the East Oregonian Gallery then explore the Umatilla River, shooting from the River Walk that is easily accessible near the Arts Center.

S.P.O.D. stands for Self-Published on Demand, and it's a great way for artists and photographers to produce professional looking coffee table books that used to be cost prohibitive. Services like Blurb.com allow you to order one or two books at a time, making it perfect for special occasions or gifts. Students will learn a bit about typography, layout and design so that they can go beyond basic templates and make a truly professional looking publication. Armed with confidence in how to prep images, write text and use the online interface, you'll be ready to design and order your book(s) on your own.

KNITTING IN THE ROUND

Take your knitting skills to the next level by knitting in the round.  The project choice(s) are yours - hats, mittens, fingerless gloves, socks, using patterns available online.  At the first class, Nikii will show examples as well as the pros and cons of each style and then you and your wallet can decide what you want to make over the remainder of the class. Students should be comfortable working in the round and be able to do the knit and purl stitches.

ABSTRACT PORTRAITS

Learn to construct abstract portraits with the use of bold colors freely. Discussions about the history of painting and the place that abstraction has in art history. Supplies provided include a canvas, quality acrylic paints and brushes. Beginner and experienced painters welcome.

Graphic design is fun, don’t let complicated design programs hold you back! Learn how to illustrate in a vector based program and then how to use it in various print forms. Design posters, booklets, business cards, and more. Bring a logo, drawing, art piece or other idea that you would like to turn into a digital design. In the first class, Brooke will go over different options for design programs and walk you through the subscription process. Please note: some design programs require paid subscriptions that are not covered by the class fee. Students will be required to bring their own laptop with WiFi capabilities.

A class for those who love to draw! In this 6-part advanced drawing class, we’ll indulge ourselves, digging in each week, exploring traditional drawing tools and materials to develop a series of fully-realized still life drawings. Bring an old sketchbook for warm-ups, but everything else will be provided.

KNITTING FOR BEGINNERS

We had so much fun with this class past fall, we’re doing it again! Over 6 easy sessions, you’ll learn a variety of stitches, including knit, purl, stockinette, garter and seed stitch. You’ll leave with a handmade gift or treasure for yourself or loved one—plus the skills and resources to keep on going. Delanne will contact students individually about materials and purchases for the class.

POTTERY: INTERMEDIATE WHEEL THROWING

JANUARY 10TH – FEBRUARY 14TH (6 SESSIONS)

A scheduled time for post-beginner throwers to get together and continue explorations on the pottery wheel. Marie will be available to troubleshoot and answer questions as you fine tune your throwing skills. Materials include a bag of clay, glazes and firing time. Prerequisite: 2 terms of beginning wheel throwing or recent college-level ceramics course.

POTTERY: BEGINNING WHEEL THROWING

JANUARY 11TH – FEBRUARY 15TH (6 SESSIONS)

Use the pottery wheel to make functional ceramic forms. Marie will share info about process, materials, and tools, and students will get plenty of wheel-time to practice. All materials supplied in class, including clay and ample open studio time. This class fills quickly so be sure to send in your payment and registration soon!

JEWELRY MAKING: GET WIRED!

JANUARY 11TH – FEBRUARY 8TH (5 SESSIONS)

Learn to make wire loops, a fundamental technique for creating beaded jewelry such as earrings, bracelets, and necklaces.  Each week students will learn progressively more advanced skills to complete one or more pieces of jewelry of your choice.  We will work with wire to create beautiful jewelry with simple loops, wrapped loops, coils, wrapped beads, and more. Bring your own beads, or chose some from the Arts Center collection.

INTERMEDIATE GUITAR

Build your guitar skills while playing music with others in this fun, relaxed group. Mike will incorporate the foundations of good guitar playing into a group jam session, working with each student to help them improve their skills and knowledge. You don’t need to read music beforehand, but we’ll start learning how as we go along.

STAINED GLASS
with Celia Hampton

THURSDAYS, 6:00 – 8:00 PM

FEBRUARY 1ST – MARCH 22ND (8 SESSIONS)

Learn to craft beautiful stained-glass pieces. Over the course of this class, you’ll start with the basics of glass cutting and work through the whole stained-glass process. You’ll finish a simple, unique piece to brighten your home, or a few smaller pieces to give as gifts. Beginner and intermediate learners welcome! Class fees include materials, 16 hours of instruction time, and access to ample studio time available outside of class.
